Providing Peace of Mind for a Caring Daughter

Being a full-time caregiver for a loved one can be a difficult, and often, tiring job. Many times, a caregiver has responsibilities, such as work and children, in addition to providing care for an aging family member.  However, there are services in the community that offer relief to caregivers. ElderServe provides an Adult Day Health Center to individuals with mild cognitive or physical disabilities who require daily medical supervision. For mother and daughter, Dorothy and Carol, ElderServe’s Adult Day Health Center was the perfect solution.

Dorothy is an 89-year-old widow who lives with her daughter. Dorothy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2010 and is now wheelchair-bound. As Dorothy’s symptoms progressed, Carol realized that she would need to be her mother’s caregiver. However, Carol works full time, which would leave her mother at home by herself. Dorothy’s health would be at risk as she would have no medical supervision. She would not have any social interactions during the day either.

In October of 2012, Carol heard about ElderServe’s Adult Day Health Center from their family physician. She called the director and decided to take a tour with her mother the next day.  Carol was impressed by everything offered at the center, including: a hot meal, activities throughout the day, and medical supervision by a full-time nurse. She also loved that the Adult Day Center shared a location with ElderServe’s Senior Center, which allowed Adult Day participants to take part in other activities in the building. Carol and Dorothy both thought it would be a great fit so they signed up!

Today, Dorothy is still a client with the Adult Day Health Center and enjoys the numerous activities throughout the day like bingo, chair exercises, and games. She says, “The staff treats me so well. I really enjoy coming here.”

Carol is so thankful that she found ElderServe and has recommended the Adult Day Health Center to many of her friends and neighbors. She has peace of mind knowing that her mom is properly cared for during the day. “It’s great that my mom can enjoy and look forward to something in the latter years of her life. She’s always so happy to be there.”

ElderServe’s Adult Day Health Center is located at 631 South 28th Street, Louisville, KY 40211 and is open from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. If your loved one would like to try a complimentary day, or if you have questions about payment options, please contact Tracy Steinberg, Adult Day Health Center Director, at 502.776.3066 or tsteinberg@elderserveinc.org.

Promoting Wellness

Two senior African-American women walk in a neighborhood.
Active Choices
Active Choices is an individualized, telephonic support program for homebound or home-limited seniors, ages 60 and older, who want to be more active. Wellness Coordinator, Sarah Irvin, helps determine a physical activity plan and goals that best fits each person individually. Telephone calls are made to the older adult on a regular basis over a 6-month period to assist with incorporating physical activities into daily life.
Healthy Habits for Adults
Healthy Habits for Adults offers wellness workshops for adults, ages 50 and older, taught by volunteers, ages 50 and older. The program is offered in various locations in Louisville through a partnership between ElderServe and the OASIS Institute. Each one-hour class includes a healthy snack, recipe ideas, nutrition lesson, and low-impact exercises.

Dr. Keith Knapp Honored as 2017 Champion for the Aging

ElderServe was pleased to present Dr. Keith Knapp, PhD, CNHA, CNA with the Champion for the Aging Award on Friday, June 9. The luncheon took place at the Galt House Hotel, which was attended by over 350 community members, professionals, and public officials to support both ElderServe and Dr. Knapp. He says, “I am greatly honored to accept the Champion for the Aging Award from ElderServe. It has been my passion, and privilege, to serve elders and their families for over three decades! The relationships have certainly been reciprocal. As more and more of us continue to be blessed with living longer lives, our community should be grateful for the consistent quality and effectiveness of the services provided by ElderServe to assist our most frail and vulnerable seniors.”

Dr. Knapp has dedicated his entire 37-year career to enhancing the quality of life for older adults, including leading the Episcopal Church Home and Christian Care Communities. Today, Dr. Knapp is an associate professor at Bellarmine University, overseeing the school’s first-ever undergraduate program in health services and senior living leadership studies in its recently redesigned College of Health Professions (formerly the Lansing School of Nursing and Health Sciences.) Recognition for his accomplishments include: The University of Kentucky, College of Public Health’s “Outstanding Alumnus of the Year,” and the American College of Health Care Administrator’s “National Distinguished Administrator of the Year” and “National Distinguished Service to ACHCA Award.”

All the proceeds from this fund-raising event directly support older adults in our community.

A Letter from our CEO

“If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever.” ~ Kofi Annan

ElderServe is fortunate to have over 400 volunteers a year who provide a variety of services.  This includes groups who do yard work for seniors to individuals who teach exercise classes to older adults.  We have four programs that are “volunteer driven” meaning that we could not provide the service without volunteers!  TeleCare is one of these programs.  The main purpose of TeleCare is to address social isolation.  Based on a simple concept, a homebound older adult receives a phone call, five days a week, from a volunteer.  It’s a reliable means of contact and personal connection.  In 2016, 92 older adults in Louisville received social support  thanks to TeleCare volunteers.

Robert says, “I really appreciate the call and it takes away my loneliness.” We also find that the volunteers benefit from the opportunity to support others.  Inam Shalati, a TeleCare volunteer for two years, says, “Being a TeleCare caller is sheer joy for me!  Because I am homebound, it is my connection to the community.  I feel so fortunate to have friends across Louisville.”  What a wonderful feeling to know that both the recipient and the volunteer get such great satisfaction.  If you would like to be a volunteer, please contact Megan Carpenter, Volunteer Services Manager, at 502.736.3838 or mcarpenter@elderserveinc.org.
