ElderServe’s Senior Companions program might best be described as “seniors helping seniors.”
We match active, low-income adults 55 and older with frail or isolated peers. Our Senior Companions provide caregivers with a break, take clients to appointments or shopping, help prepare meals and join in activities such as arts, crafts and games.
Volunteers in this program receive wellness training that helps them live healthier lives, and they in turn share their knowledge with clients. Companions learn how to address disabilities, depression, loneliness and terminal illness. They also join together for service projects.
Companions volunteer 20-40 hours a week. Some volunteers may earn a small stipend, and all of them undergo background checks. This program is federally funded through Corporation for National and Community Service.
